Big Goals, Small Steps

Educational resource

A prompt for making a large or vague goal easier to start by defining one concrete next step.

The CBT Cards mascot climbs small blank paper-card steps toward an open notebook.
A large goal becomes more workable when the first action is small and visible.

Try the card

  1. Name the larger goal in plain language.
  2. Ask what the smallest visible action would move it forward.
  3. Make that action specific enough that you can tell whether it happened.
  4. Choose when and where you will try it.
  5. Afterwards, decide on the next step instead of planning the entire project again.

A small step is useful because it makes starting observable. It does not mean the larger goal is trivial or easy.
