Socratic Questioning

Educational resource

A small set of questions for examining an interpretation rather than automatically arguing with yourself or forcing a positive answer.

The CBT Cards mascot examines a blank card with a magnifying glass beside an open notebook.
Socratic questions explore evidence, alternatives, and useful next steps.

Try the card

  • What evidence supports this thought?
  • What evidence does not fit it?
  • Is there another way to understand the same situation?
  • What would I say if someone I cared about described the same situation?
  • What action would make sense if I used the most balanced account available?

Questions are useful when they open the situation up. They are less useful when they become another way to demand certainty.

Source and scope

Source record: card-27 in the public MetalHatsCats CBT Toolkit v0.1.0. The source prompt asks whether another view is possible and what evidence exists for and against the thought.

This is an educational reflection aid, not individualized therapy or a method for proving that a person's concern is false.
